‘Biafran Airlines’ plane? No, photo of Lufthansa Airbus

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu has commissioned Biafran Airlines from Israel, claims an article on the Biafra Star website.

Biafra is a region in south-eastern Nigeria. Its secession in 1967 sparked a civil war, and calls for its independence from sympathisers continue.

The 1 August 2019 article carries a photo of a plane with “Biafran Airlines” emblazoned on its side. The story has been shared widely on Facebook.

It says: The Biafra airline is important, as we ‘Biafrans’ with soon get their independence as the International bodies showing concerned to the actualization of Biafra from Nigeria.”

But a reverse image search reveals that the article’s photo has been altered.

The original photo shows an aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet, the German flag carrier. In the doctored version, the Lufthansa logo has been replaced with the words “Biafran Airlines”.

The plane is a Lufthansa Airbus A380, which entered scheduled service on 11 June 2010 when it flew from Frankfurt to Tokyo. Jennifer Ojugbeli
