Ignore ‘2020 imisebenzi’ Facebook page – it’s just another scam

The Facebook page “2020 imisebenzi” posts dozens of messages offering jobs and training at private companies and government departments in South Africa, such as Cambridge supermarket, Coca-Cola, Telkom and more.

Some of the posts say people “with or without a matric” – a grade 12 qualification – can apply for jobs with salaries of R6,000 to R15,000 a month.

The page has more than 6,000 followers. But all its posts have one thing in common – they link to dodgy websites.

Many of the links go to a page called techforno.com. The site is full of pop-up ads that the website owner likely uses to make money from views and clicks.

The website doesn’t give people any real way to apply for any job.

Signs of a scam

The Facebook posts sometimes ask people to comment with the province they live in. This is called engagement bait and is a sure sign of a scam.

Similar tactics – posting fake job ads or other offers to lure people to websites – have been used by other Facebook pages.

When you see something advertised on Facebook, make sure that any link provided takes you to an official employment or company website.

Africa Check teams up with Facebook

Africa Check is a partner in Facebook’s third-party fact-checking programme to help stop the spread of false information on social media.

The content we rate as “false” will be downgraded on Facebook and Instagram. This means fewer people will see it.

You can also help identify false information on Facebook. This guide explains how.
