The 22 June 2020 post claims the agency is recruiting for a number of different positions, including records management officers, office administrators, information communication technology officers and researchers.
The post includes a link to a website where job descriptions for all the jobs are shown, in what appear to be scans from a printed document.
Interested candidates are asked to post physical copies of academic and professional certificates, transcripts and testimonials to be considered for the advertised positions. The real contact details for the data agency’s national headquarters are listed.
So, is the agency hiring or not?
The data agency explained through its official Twitter account that yes, it was hiring, but only internally.
“The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) would like to bring to the attention of the public that it has NOT externally advertised any vacancy, as purported through social media,” the agency tweeted on 23 June.
It added a link to a full press release which explained that it was only accepting applications from people who already worked for the bureau.
“We wish to notify the public that what is being circulated is an INTERNAL advertisement meant to fill positions left by employees who exited the Bureau.”
The press release said that all KNBS jobs were advertised in daily newspapers, on their official website and through “official social media sites”.
It added: “Anytime you receive a job advertisement purported to be from the KNBS, kindly verify the details from our official platforms. The recruitment processes are free and fair, and do not involve exchange of money or favours of any kind.” – Grace Gichuhi
