Loans for ‘broke Kenyans’ from Nairobi governor? No, it’s a scam

The Facebook page Nairobi County Loans claims to offer loans of KSh10,000 to KSh3 million from county governor Mike Sonko’s “loans foundation”.

The page’s cover photo shows cash with the words “Sonko loans WhatsApp 0743901970”.

On 10 June 2020 the page posted a message: “Good morning Kenyans don't be broke juu Sonko loans foundation inapeana loans from 10k to 3m whatsapp the word LOAN to 0743901970 and get your loan immediately.”

Africa Check has previously debunked a scam claim that Sonko was giving out loans, motorbikes and school fees.

Is this another scam?

‘County not giving out loans’

The page is not the official Facebook page of the county’s government, even though it uses the logo of the Nairobi City County government

And there are no loan offers to be found on Sonko’s official Facebook page, where he posts about his administration’s charitable activities.

We asked the county government about the Nairobi County Loans page.

“That is a scam! Ignore it,” a spokesperson told us. “Nairobi county is not giving out any loans.” – Grace Gichuhi
