Pregnant with 11 babies? No, woman with giant ovarian tumour

A Kenyan Facebook page has shared two photos with the claim they show a miraculous single birth of 11 babies.

In one, a woman with an unnaturally large belly is lying in a hospital bed. The second photo shows 11 babies surrounded by smiling doctors and nurses.

The Kiswahili caption reads: “Pichani mama mmoja nchini Cuba aliyejifungua mapacha 11.

This translates as: “Pictured is a Cuban woman who gave birth to 11 twins. One is male and the rest are female. Share this photo so that people can see how great and wonderful Allah is.”

Is this the story of these photos? We checked.

Massive belly from 60 kilogram tumour

A reverse image search using the photo of the woman leads to news reports from August 2014. She is Mercedes Talamantes, a Mexican woman who had surgery to remove a 60-kilogram ovarian tumour.

Mexican news site BCS Noticias reports that “surgeon Gilberto Inzunza Salazar explained that the operation lasted four hours, and had no major complications because the tumour in the ovary was described as benign”. Another report attributes the photo to Reporters Without Borders.

The tumour had grown over five years, and had become so large that Talamantes could hardly move. She finally sought medical help after much nagging by her daughter, according to a video in a report by the Daily Mail.

Some of the reports claim it was the world’s biggest tumour. But BBC records of medical feats show that that “largest tumour ever removed intact was a multicystic mass of the right ovary weighing 137.6 kg”. (Guinness World Records say it weighed 138.7 kilograms.) It was removed  at Stanford University Medical Center in the US in 1991.

“The patient weighed 95 kg (210 lb) after the operation and left theatre on one stretcher. Her cyst left on another,” the BBC says.

Babies born at fertility clinic

Another reverse image search using the photo of 11 babies led us to the Nadkarni IVF blog of the 21st Century Hospital and Test Tube Baby Centre in India. A number of photos of the babies are published in a blog post.
