Scam! Boxer stores don’t advertise jobs on Facebook – ignore fake posts

A Facebook post is offering 850 jobs at Boxer, a South African supermarket chain. But it shows all the signs of a scam.

It says the company has several positions available for bakers, cashiers, cleaners, cooks, drivers, packers, security staff and more.

The salary is given as R4,000 to R5,500. Job seekers are told, in isiZulu, to comment “help” on the post and share it on Facebook pages with 10 or more members.

A similar post on Facebook claims no experience is needed but applicants should have passed grades 10, 11 or 12, the last three years of South African basic education.

A link in the posts goes to a website showing only an “account suspended” notice.

Boxer doesn’t advertise jobs on Facebook

Africa Check asked Jade Skinner, Boxer’s digital marketing coordinator for Boxer, if the posts were authentic.

“We can confirm that these are fake posts and not posted by a Boxer employee. Boxer does not advertise job posts on Facebook,” she told Africa Check.

Skinner said the company logo had been photoshopped from old Boxer ads.

“Whoever is doing this has stolen artwork we’ve used for something else and then adapted it for a job post,” she said. – Dancan Bwire

Africa Check teams up with Facebook

Africa Check is a partner in Facebook’s third-party fact-checking programme to help stop the spread of false information on social media.

You can also help identify false information on Facebook. This guide explains how.
