‘Lamba Lolo Schools’ image photoshopped

A photo shared on a Kenyan Facebook page suggests there are “lamba lolo” schools in Nairobi. It shows lettering on the side of a yellow school van that reads: “LAMBA LOLO SCHOOLS, KOMAROCK PH.3B.”

According to the Urban Dictionary, lamba lolo” loosely translates as “lick a lollipop”. “Originated from Kenya, the phrase initially meant giving oral sex.”

So this infamous sheng term is an unlikely name for a school.

The photo’s caption reads: “Mwaijua hii??” That means “Do you know this one?” in Kiswahili.

Some users commented that they had seen it, and one said such a school was in their neighbourhood.

Do these schools exist? We checked.

Lamba Glory Schools

A reverse image search for the photo of the van led us to a post on a Facebook page devoted to trending gossip in Nairobi.

The post shows two photos. One is of the van with the “lamba lolo” lettering. The other is of the same van, but this time lettered “LAMBA GLORY SCHOOLS”.

The caption reads: “The Komarock School called LAMBA GLORY which was Photo shopped to LAMBA LOLO.”

The manipulated image was even mentioned in an article in the Nation, Kenya’s biggest newspaper. “Earlier this year, a kindergarten school van’s name in Nairobi was photo-shopped to read as ‘Lamba Lolo Schools’ instead of ‘Lamba Glory Schools’.”

Lamba Glory Schools has a website and can be found on Google maps.

Hit rap song popularises lamba lolo

Lamba lolo has recently become a catchphrase among Kenyans.

Chapisho hilo linaonyesha picha mbili.

Jina lamba lolo hivi karibuni limekuwa jina maarufu miongoni mwa vijana nchini Kenya.

– Grace Gichuhi
