Political rallies in Kenya? No, photo shows crowds welcoming Algerian football champs home

A photo of a group of people on the top deck of a bus surrounded by a huge crowd has been posted on two Kenyan Facebook pages, with two different claims of what it shows.

The caption for one reads: “Ruto in Kisumu Town Luo wameamua ni Ruto 2022.” That’s Kiswahili for: “The Luo community has decided that it will be Ruto come the general election in 2022.”

William Ruto is Kenya’s deputy president.

On another Facebook page, the photo was shared with the claim it shows a crowd welcoming Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement.

Here the caption reads: “Ukaribisho wa Raila Odinga kwenye mji wa Nyeri hii leo baada ya kuhudhuria Kanisa.” This loosely translates as: “Raila Odinga’s welcome to the town of Nyeri today after attending a church service.”

Does the photo show rallies for either of these political giants? We checked.

Celebration of Algeria’s 2019 Afcon win

A reverse image search for the photo brings up Algeria. The clues were in Arabic script on the side of the bus. We also found a video posted on Twitter by Algerian news site TSA Algérie showing a victory parade for Algeria’s national football team.

A multimedia story on Sports Illustrated shows the bus with its Arabic script, the Algerian flag and the players. The sports magazine also reposted TSA Algérie’s Twitter video with the caption: “An absolutely WILD scene as the Algerian national team arrives home after winning #AFCON2019.”
