Yes, divorce quote by author Jennifer Weiner

A meme circulating on Facebook attributes a quote on divorce to US writer Jennifer Weiner

“Divorce isn't such a tragedy,” it reads. “A tragedy is staying in an unhappy marriage, teaching your children the wrong things about love. Nobody ever died of divorce.”

The quote has been shared on Facebook in South Africa and elsewhere as far back as 2012. It was recently tagged as possibly false by the social network’s fact-checking system.

Are the words by Weiner?

Quote from novel

The quote is from Weiner’s best-selling novel, Good in Bed, published in 2001.

In the novel, the character Selma says it in conversation with her family during a meal on Thanksgiving, the US national holiday. – Lloyd Hazvineyi

Africa Check is a partner in Meta's third-party fact-checking programme to help stop the spread of false information on social media.

The content we rate as “false” will be downgraded on Facebook and Instagram. This means fewer people will see it.

You can also help identify false information on Facebook. This guide explains how.
