CORRECTED: Yes, Kenya’s prosecutions body dropped conspiracy to murder charge against governor Obado

IMPORTANT: We have on 17 May 2019 taken down this check originally published on 16 May 2019, which had focused on murder charges against Kenyan governor Okoth Obado.

In it, we wrote that some Facebook pages had falsely shared that all murder charges against Obado have been dropped.

As Kenya’s office of the Director of Public Prosecutions noted, it is not dismissing murder charges against the Migori county governor. What was dropped was the conspiracy to murder charge against the governor, but two murder charges remain.

We have further amended the headline to reflect this.

We also apologise to the site Kenyans.co.ke for stating that it may have been the source of the false claim. We deeply regret the errors.

Africa Check teams up with Facebook

Africa Check has partnered with Facebook to combat fake news and false information on the social platform. This fact-check is part of the initiative.

As part of its third-party fact-checking programme, Facebook allows its partners to see public articles, pictures or videos that have been flagged as potentially inaccurate.

Content rated as “false” by fact-checkers will be downgraded in news feeds. This means fewer people will see it.

You can help us identify fake news and false information on Facebook. This guide explains how.
