Did South African men spend more time on childcare during lockdown?

While some men reported spending more time caring for children, an analysis of National Income Dynamics Study – Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey data found that a bigger share of women devoted more time to childcare during South Africa's Covid-19 lockdown.

In interviews with about 7,000 adult respondents in May and June 2020, a greater share of women reported living with at least one child under the age of 17.

Among those who live with a child this young, 67% of men spent more time looking after children in April. For women, it was 73%.

The majority of this group said they spent more than four extra hours per day on childcare.
