Is Ghana among the world’s heavily indebted poor countries?

The Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank aims to ensure that “no poor country faces a debt burden it cannot manage”.

The IMF announced in 2002 that Ghana would benefit from debt relief. The HIPC process was completed in 2004 and Ghana – like other countries that have benefited – cannot apply again.
