How widespread is female genital mutilation (FGM) or cutting in Nigeria?

Nigeria has the third highest burden of FGM globally. It accounts for almost one in ten of the 230 million FGM survivors globally and 22% of the 68 million girls at risk of FGM between 2015 and 2030. Although the national FGM rate among women has dropped from 25% to 20%, more efforts are needed to fully eliminate the practice in Nigeria.
