What is the literacy rate in Kenya?
Kenya’s adult literacy rate was estimated to be 81.5% in 2018. This is according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (Unesco) Institute for Statistics. Literacy is defined as the “percentage of the population ages 15 and older that can, with understanding, both read and write a short simple statement on everyday life”.
The Basic Report of the 2015/2016 Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey deemed 84.5% of adults in Kenya able to read and write. This number was based on self-assessment.
