What is the murder rate in South Africa?

Between January and March 2021, the South African Police Service recorded 4,976 murders. For the same period in 2022, that number increased to 6,083, an increase of 22.2%. Reported attempted murders also increased from 12,133 to 13,799.

The murder rate – calculated based on the national mid-year population estimates (60.6 million by the end of June 2022) – is 10 per 100,000 people.
