What is Nigeria’s suicide rate?

In Nigeria, the rate of suicide is considerably high at 6.9 per 100,000 of the population in 2019. This translates to roughly 7,019 people a year. The current rate is less than the average global rate of 9 per 100,000. However, the rate is likely higher as underreporting related to the stigma and illegality associated with suicide, and the poor vital registration system in Nigeria’s healthcare system make it difficult to accurately measure the country's burden of suicide.
