Useful sources about Africa

This research report uses data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics to investigate the financing of education in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically looking at the challenges of education expansion, equity and quality.

The Education in Africa database by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics provides data on school standards on the continent.

"Sharing higher education’s promise beyond the few in Sub-Saharan Africa" is a World Bank study published in 2017. It gives insight into the demand for and supply of tertiary education, and educational disparities, in sub-Saharan Africa.

The African Elections Database provides data on elections in sub-Saharan Africa, sourced from public information. It is unclear whether the data is kept updated, as recent electoral changes in countries such as Ethiopia and South Africa are not included. It does, however, provide historical data.

A research report by the US Law Library of Congress that examines the regulatory frameworks on wildlife trafficking and poaching in seven African countries: Botswana, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and the Central African Republic. The report also discusses the laws that criminalise poaching and trafficking in wildlife, the penalties imposed for these crimes, and the state institutions tasked with enforcing the laws.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) publishes State of Conservation reports based on annual recommendations to the World Heritage Committee. The reports assessed 61 natural and mixed UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2016. Sixteen African countries were included.

The Great Elephant Census (GEC) is an Africa-wide count funded by Paul G Allen and aimed at gaining a better understanding of elephant numbers across the continent through a large aerial survey of African wildlife.
