IN SHORT: Online posts claim that Prof Augustus Nuwagaba is the new governor of the Bank of Uganda. This is not true, the position remains vacant.
A Facebook post shared on a page with 6,000 members claims that Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, has appointed Prof Augustus Nuwagaba as the new governor of the country’s central bank.
The post, dated 2 July 2023, includes a photo of Nuwagaba.
The caption reads: “JUST IN: Prof Augustus Nuwagaba to become the new Governor Bank of Uganda. Congratulations Prof, and Uganda! “Space ’.”
The post became vacant following the death of Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile. Tumusiime served as governor and chairperson of the board from 2001.
The position has been vacant for over a year, but there has been speculation around who will replace Tumusiime.
The claim about Nuwagaba taking over the reins has also been made on Twitter here.
But has Museveni appointed Nuwagaba as central bank governor?
Museveni hasn’t appointed bank governor yet
On 2 July 2023, Faruk Kirunda, deputy press secretary to the Ugandan president, dismissed the reports as "FAKE NEWS" on his official Twitter account.
He wrote: “FAKE NEWS! It's not true that Prof. Nuwagaba has been appointed BOU Governor. H.E @KagutaMuseveni knows his duty and when he makes such an appointment, it will be communicated officially. FK.”
